In March 2019, Apple updated the iMac to feature 9th-generation Intel Core i9 processors and Radeon Vega graphics. Unlike most other Apple releases, Apple opted not to announce the iMac at an event, rather to update the specs and release a press statement. For the first time, the iMac can support 6-core or 8-core Intel processors. If you’re using macOS Mojave or later, choose Apple menu System Preferences, then click Software Update. Upgrade to macOS Big Sur

Make a backup

Before you upgrade, make a complete backup with Time Machine, or store your files in iCloud.

If the installer needs more storage space to upgrade, you can free up space using tools that come with your Mac.
